No shortage of undergraduate seats, says govt

SHILLONG: The state government has assured that priority would be accorded to students of the state for admission into various undergraduate courses in the upcoming session.
An official source from the Education department said that the department has made an assessment of the number of seats available in the state following apprehension from the student community about shortage of seats in the state.
The COVID-19 situation is proving a dampener for students desirous of seeking admission in colleges and universities across the country.
As per calculations, there are 30,748 seats for under graduate courses in the state, an excess of 7,003 seats.
The official said that 28,251 seats are available in colleges in the state while the rest of the seats are available in private universities and NEHU, which also offers UG courses.
) In the recently declared results of the HSSLC examinations, 2576 students passed in the Science stream; 1684 students passed out from the Commerce stream while 18,039 candidates passed in the Arts stream.
As many as 2508 students have cleared the CBSE Class XII exams in the state while 494 students have emerged successful in the ISC examination, accounting for a total of 23,745 candidates who are going to seek admission in various UG courses in the state.
