Death toll mounts to 76, Assam flood situation still grim

GUWAHATI:  Flood situation in Assam has remained grim even as five more deaths due to the current wave flood were reported from five separate districts of Assam during the last 24 hours taking the death toll up to 76.

The current wave of flood has affected over 40 lakh people across 28 districts in the state. The new cases of drowning deaths were reported from districts of Dhubri (01), Darrang (01), Bongaigaon (01), Goalpara (01) and Kamrup (01).

The wave of flood has so far damaged standing crop on 35.76 lakh hectares of land in the state. Dhubri district has remained the worst affected with about 9 lakh people being affected by the flood, followed by Goalpara district (4.43 lakh), Barpeta district (4.29 lakh and South Salmara district (2.25 lakh).

As many as 51, 421 people are currently taking shelter in 711 relief camps/centres across the state. The main channel of the Brahmaputra is still flowing above the red mark at Jorhat, Tezput, Goalpara, Dhubri and South Salmara. The water level has marginally receded in Kaziranga National Park where the current wave of flood has created havoc by inundating about 95 % of the core areas of the Park
