SHILLONG: It looks like the young leaders of the Congress party are on a role in motivating the educated young to join politics for bringing about positive change in the field of governance.

Following the footsteps of Rahul Gandhi (young charismatic general secretary of the Congress party) who has been campaigning across the nation motivating the young educated youth to join politics, Urban Affairs Minister and lone Congress MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh is also not far behind when it comes to making the young blood realize their role in active politics.

While speaking during the Alumni Day celebration at Shillong College here on Saturday, Ampareen urged upon the educated youth of the State to be role models for positive change by taking part in mainstream politics.

“I strongly feel that the State requires politicians who think beyond their own self interest. The only way we can produce such politicians is by having the youth take part in handling responsibilities of leading the State,” said Lyngdoh, who is also an Alumni of the college.

While maintaining that there is nothing wrong in joining politics if one has the real intention of serving the people, she pointed out that politics becomes dirty if people enter politics with their own vested interests.

The Urban Affairs Minister insisted that the State requires politicians who have the potential of becoming good policy makers.

“The fact is that at present there are few politicians who are good policy makers. Good people must join politics as they alone can help bring about many positive changes and also help remove corruption,” Ampareen said.

She mentioned that her main reason in entering the political arena was to serve the people of the state and address their issues.

“I am really happy to be getting this opportunity to serve the people. I have never dreamt to reach upto this position. But I am really enjoying being able to serve the people. I would like to continue this job but it would all depends if the people re-elected me in the upcoming election,” the Urban Affairs Minister said.

Meanwhile, Ampareen said that the youth should have the ambition of becoming job providers rather than job seekers.

While insisting that the youth should not forget their roots, she said that it is a matter of concern that majority of the youth hailing of the rural areas that comes to the Urban Areas for pursuing education tends to forget who they are and where they belong from. “I would be more than happy to facilitate a graduate who have tried to take up agriculture as the medium to achieve something in life, “Urban Affairs Minister said.

On the occasion of the Alumni Day, the Shillong College Alumni Association (SCAA) felicitated 16 meritorious students who brought laurel to the college by topping the various university examinations

Earlier, Ampareen also inaugurated the new class rooms of the college.

Among others who spoke on the occasion included college principal Dr KD Ramsiej and SCAA president Joining Pde.
