MAWKYRWAT: As heavy rain continues to lash many parts of the state, the swollen Tihiang river has again washed away the culvert cutting off the road which connects seven villages in War San Lyngdoh area in South West Khasi Hills.
The president of the Synjuk ki Seng Samla Shnong (SSSS), War San Lyngdoh area, Sandy Myrthong, on Monday informed that the incident took place on Sunday morning.
The river, which has risen above the danger level due to incessant downpour, again broke the culvert at the same spot as earlier. This was the third time this month that the river had washed away the culvert.
The first was on the night of July 2 while the second was July 9.
Consequently, road connection to seven villages in War San Lyngdoh area of the district including Majai, New Majai, Nongummer, Mawhiangpruda, Nongrynniang, Nongpuinskei and Nongtiniam villages has been cut off again.
“The residents of these villages are now in trouble again and they will now have to carry goods on their backs. For some it will even take more than two-and-half hours to reach home,” Myrthong said.
Myrthong informed that after the second incident, the government had repaired the culvert and finished the work on July 13.
“We request the authority to improve the maintenance and repair of the culvert so that it does not wash away again,” Myrthong said.
