SHILLONG: Maharashtra police have registered a case against an unidentified person who reportedly two Meghalaya students in Pune on Thursday.
“We have registered a case on the basis of a complaint lodged by two students from Meghalaya,” a senior inspector Dattawadi Police Station (Pune) Vijay Singh Gaikwad informed over telephone on Friday.
Gaikwad said that they were ready to provide security to two students “if they request for it.”
On Friday, the two students filed a complaint at the Pune Police Commissionerate, explaining the incident.
Earlier on Thursday, it was reported in a national newspaper that two students from the State — Synsharlang Lymba (18) and Rahul G Khongsar (18) – received a threat. Both are the Class XI (arts) students of Pushpa Devi Dugad Junior College, Pune.
“While returning from college on Thursday at around 1.30pm, a man at Dattawadi stopped us and asked about our identity. We told him that we are from Meghalaya, but he forced us to accept that we are Assamese. The man further forced me to smoke a cigarette,” Synsharlang told the newspaper.
Rahul said, “The man warned us that if we come out of home or if we continue to attack muslims in Assam, we will have to face grievous consequences here. We are terrified. We are from Meghalaya and have nothing to do with Assam riots.” The Meghalaya boys informed their friends who then reportedly contacted Mayur Karjatkar of My Home India (MHI), which provides helpline to Northeast students in Pune. Later, they lodged a complaint at Dattawadi police station.
“When we reached Dandekar bridge area, one person stopped us and asked about our identity,” he said.
