Siliguri: Two people were killed in West Bengal after being pushed out of a Guwahati-bound train carrying Northeastern people fleeing Bangalore, officials said on Sunday.
The incident took place on Saturday night between Belakoba and Raninagar stations of North East Frontier Railway (NEF). Nine others were injured, four of them seriously.
NEF spokesman S Hajong informed that 11 people were thrown out of the train shortly after it left New Jalpaiguri station.
While one of the victims died on the spot, the other perished in the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri. One of the victims has been identified.
The injured have been admitted to the district hospital and the North Bengal Medical College Hospital.
Railway sources quoting one of the injured passengers admitted to the district hospital said they were looted of their belongings and beaten up severely before being thrown out of the train by unknown persons.
Railway sources said the train was carrying a large number of people from the North East who had left Bangalore following rumours that people from the NE region could be targeted. (Agencies)
