SHILLONG: The CEM of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC),Titos Chyne, on Thursday said that the Council will extend financial assistance of Rs 36,000 annually to primary schools that do not receive any grant from the state government.
He told reporters after the Executive Committee meeting that financial assistance would be extended to such schools in every constituency.
Chyne also said amendment would be made to the Khasi Social Custom of Lineage Act 1997 to recognise the Ring bia and Shaw bhoi, which is a customary practice followed by a certain clan in the border areas of Ri Bhoi.
It is a practice followed by people from times immemorial and according to which a man from the area takes a non-Khasi woman to be his wife and their offspring will take the husband’s title.
He said that the KHADC will come up with an ordinance/executive order as people are complaining that the children from such marriages cannot get Scheduled Tribe (ST) tribe status.
Chyne said that the KHADC will send the ordinance immediately for the Governor’s assent.
