Shillong: Banking operations across the state remained paralysed on the first day of the two-day nationwide strike called by employees of public sector banks (PSBs) who are opposing reforms in the sector and outsourcing of non-core activities.
Normal banking operations, including cash transactions, cheque clearances, foreign exchange dealings were affected.
The banks in Shillong wore a deserted look on Wednesday.
Unions are protesting against banking sector reforms such as the Banking Sector Laws Amendment Bill which seeks to remove restrictions on voting rights of foreign shareholders and increase voting rights of private investors in the PSBs.
“The introduction of this Bill will prove detrimental to the interest of the people and the economic freedom of the country”, said a striking employee.
