Man accused of minor’s rape dies from assault in Garo Hills

TURA: A man accused of raping a minor girl in Silkigre area of Chokpot region of South Garo Hills has died after being assaulted by a group of people early Saturday morning.
The assault is said to have occured on Friday night after the man, Harun Sheikh, was accused of raping a minor girl from the village.
The accused reportedly commited the crime on Wednesday and after the incident was reported an angry group of villagers accosted him over the crime on Friday leading to his assault.
The accused, who is married to a local woman and residing in the same village sustained grievious injuries during the beating.
“He was brought to Silkigre police station early Saturday morning with injuries and rushed to the Silkigre primary health centre for medical treatment but he passed away. Investigation is currently underway into the incident and five people are currently under interrogation in connection with the incident,” informed P Pandey, South Garo Hills superintendent of police.
