SHILLONG: The crisis situation in the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) still remains grim with power supply in the University yet to be restored till Friday night.

Aggrieved over the crisis, a delegation of a Joint Action Committee formed by the teaching and non-teaching staff of the University met Vice Chancellor Prof AN Rai on Thursday and demanded an independent inquiry into the entire crisis, even as over 100 students residing in the University hostels gheraoed the official quarter of the NEHU Vice Chancellor in the evening demanding an immediate solution to the power crisis.

The students demanded that the University authorities must provide them with generators, mineral water and even candles. A research scholar, R Shangplaing, said they wanted a written assurance from the University authorities that the power crisis would be over soon.

The delegation, which had met the Vice Chancellor during the day, also demanded that the responsibility of supplying power in the University campus should be given to the MeECL.

The teaching and non-teaching staff also expressed concern over the fact that the University campus had two 3-MVA transformers and one standby transformer, which reported technical problems in December last year, but no steps were taken to repair the transformers.

Among some of the worst sufferers are the students of Kendriya Vidyalaya located inside the University campus who are finding it tough to study without electricity.

The premier Central University of the region had plunged into darkness on Sunday at about 2 pm due to the collapse of the 3 MVA transformer which NEHU maintenance staff and engineers claimed was hit by lightning.

The University authorities had procured a 1 MVA transformer on Wednesday which was hit by a technical snag after running only for a few hours on Thursday morning.
