TURA: Forced closure of shops at Hatsingimari, Mankachar and Salmara areas of Assam gave rise to tension in the plain belt of West Garo Hills on Tuesday.

A group of people from Dhubri in Assam closed down shops along the border while also demanding the shops on the Meghalaya side, which are just across the road, to down their shutters thus raising the tension in the area.

According to sources, the people behind the forced closure were angry over recent remarks allegedly made by All Assam Students Union (AASU) leaders on the illegal immigration issue and Monday’s bandh called by the Bajrang Dal in Assam.

Magistrates and additional security forces have been stationed on the Meghalaya side of the border.
