India’s top educationists discuss NEP 2020

TURA: As the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 continues to evoke mixed reactions from top educationists across the country ever since its announcement by the Narendra Modi government, a national-level webinar was organised by the renowned Jesuit-run Loyola College in Williamnagar on Thursday to deliberate over the Policy.
During the webinar, some of India’s top educationists got together to discuss the new Policy and expressed their views and apprehension, implementation and implications about the NEP 2020.
The sole purpose of the webinar was to understand the Policy and its implementation and implications which would soon be in effect.
To discuss its pros and cons, a vibrant set of educationists led by educators, principals and administrators representing renowned institutions from across the country took part and gave valuable inputs on the current set-up and what needs to be done to further revamp education.
One of India’s top educationists, viz. Fr. Sunny Jacob SJ, Secretary, Jesuit Education Association (JEA), New Delhi, briefly explained the background of the NEP 2020 and policies regarding school education while another leading education luminary, Dr. Joseph Xavier, Administrator, Xavier Institute of Management, Chennai, gave his view points on the Policy relating to higher education.
The declared vision of the Policy was viewed with doubt and fear by several educators.
Dr. Sunny Augustine SJ, the college principal, who welcomed the resource persons and the participants, appreciated the efforts of the faculty of the Education department for their initiatives.
The attendees sent their queries and expressed their views on key elements of NEP 2020 during the interactive session, to which the speakers welcomed and responded with examples.
It may be mentioned that a vast majority of educationists across the country have pressed the panic button on the Centre’s NEP 2020, red-flagging some crucial points in the new system which, they believe, could erode the quality of education in the long run.
