Man kills journo wife in Pak
Islamabad: A woman journalist and social worker has been shot dead allegedly by her husband in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan province, a media report said on Sunday. The incident took place in Turbat, the headquarters of Kech district, on Saturday. According to a police statement, husband Mehrab Gichki took Shaheena Shaheen Baloch’s body to a hospital in a car, but fled soon afterwards. By that time, the woman had died from bullet wounds.
Police visited a house in the PTCL Colony, Turbat, where the shooting allegedly took place. Police found blood, an empty bullet shell and a bullet at the scene, the Dawn newspaper reported. (PTI)
Chile shaken by powerful quake
Santiago (Chile): An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 shook northern Chile on Saturday night, the second powerful tremor to hit the country this week, though there were no reports of casualties or property damage.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was 45 kilometers (29 miles) northwest of Ovalle in the northwest of the country, and about 400 kilometers (249 miles) north of Chile’s capital, Santiago. The quake struck at a depth of 30.7 kilometers (19 miles), it said. Chile’s National Emergency Office said there had been no reports of injuries or damage. (AP)
2nd typhoon hits Japan in a week
Tokyo: The second powerful typhoon to slam Japan in a week unleashed fierce winds and rain on southern islands on Sunday, blowing off rooftops and leaving homes without power as it edged northward into an area vulnerable to flooding and mudslides.
Weather officials warned that the rainfall from what could be a record storm would be fierce. Warnings were issued days in advance for people to be ready to take shelter and stock up on food and water. Several rivers on the main southwestern island of Kyushu were at risk of overflowing, officials said. (AP)
Migrants jump from tanker
Rome: Three migrants stranded aboard a tanker for over a month awaiting a port to disembark jumped into the Mediterranean Sea on Sunday in a sign of increasing despair on deck, the ship reported. Maersk Tankers A/S said the captain and crew of its chemical tanker Etienne quickly rescued the three migrants and brought them back aboard.
The Maersk has reported that tensions aboard the ship were growing, culminating in Sunday’s desperate jumps. (AP)
