Shillong: Two teaching associations of the State have called for separate agitation on Friday to press the State Government to accede to their various demands.

The Federation of All Meghalaya Ad hoc Secondary Teachers’ Association (FAMASTA) will hold a silent protest near the All India Radio station while the Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers’ Association (KJDSTA) has called for an indefinite dharna from Friday. The Ad hoc teachers are protesting the failure of the State Government to upgrade them into the deficit system, while the deficit teachers will protest against the non-payment of the 30 per cent of arrears due to them.

“The Government is adamant in its partial attitude. We should be treated at par with other Government teachers,” FAMASTA president B Kharumnuid said on Thursday.

“The Government should realise that eighty per cent of students in the State are being taught by the ad hoc teachers and Government must treat them equally,” she added.

On the other hand, KJDSTA president ED Nongsiang said the indefinite dharna will be staged in different zones besides many parts of the city.

“We will continue our dharna everyday till the time the Government responds to our demands,” Nongsiang said.

KJDSTA had, earlier, asked the Government to release their pending 30 per cent arrears within August 30.
