NONGSTOIN: The HANM and KSU (Nongstoin Circle) on Friday inspected all the areas of Nongstoin in a move to check non tribals who have entered Nongstoin without valid documents.

This inspection was a follow up action after both the NGOs apprehended more than 12 non tribals whereby they were punished and forced to return home.

The first operation was made by the HANM Nongstoin Circle at around 9:30am in which they apprehend 8 non tribals without their papers, trying to search for a job at Shakhambari Ferro alloys in Riwiang, West Khasi Hills.

The HANM after apprehending, took them to a bus stand and asked them to go back to their home town.

The Managers tried to plead them to let them leave the next day but they refused and ensured that they left Nongstoin immediately.

Meanwhile the KSU Nongstoin Circle also apprehended four non tribals (Punjabi’s) trying to make business at Nongstoin without proper trading license.

The KSU then issued a stern warning to all the owners of various companies to refrain from employing people who did not possess proper documents.

They said that if anyone was found providing shelter to workers without proper papers, they would act on this matter and take stringent action against them.

Speaking to this scribe, Davis Wanniang said that the Government had implemented the laws for issuing working permit and it was mandatory for all migrant workers to be in possession of these permits.

He said that he was surprised how porous the state was regarding this issue and felt that the administration needed to be alert and cautious regarding the entry of migrant labourers into the state for the purpose of acquiring jobs and that too without documents.

He also lambasted the Labour Department for not implementing the Inter- State Migrant Workmen Act of 1979 that had been enforced by the State Government.
