Robot-assisted joint replacement surgeries at Patna institute

SHILLONG: A Patna-based institute has inducted the Mako Robotic system, developed by renowned medical equipment maker, Stryker, with which it offers a robot-assisted total knee and hip replacements, a statement issued here said.
“The Anup Institute of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation has become the first hospital in North and East India to launch the Mako Robotic-arm-assisted surgery for knee and hip replacements,” the statement said.
The hospital, recently, performed 10 successful surgeries using this advanced technology and discharged all patients pain-free within 72 hours, it added. This technology ensures 100 per cent accuracy in joint replacement surgeries, reducing pain and recovery time, it said.
“With the launch of Mako Robotic-arm in Bihar, Anup Institute is leading the transformation of orthopaedic industry in North and East India,” said Dr Ashish Singh (Orthopaedic and Robotic Joint Replacement surgeon at Anup Institute).
Osteoarthritis is the most common joint condition affecting the elderly population worldwide. Highly painful and debilitating in advance cases, over 4 crore arthritis patients are estimated to need knee replacement in India. But with the application of this technology, patients will now get quick relief from the pain caused by joint degeneration.
Studies have proven that hip and knee replacements done by a robotic arm are two to three times more accurate than manual procedures. “MAKO is a contribution to make India at par with global standards offering world-class innovation for joint replacement surgeries. This smart robotic system is enabling surgeons to offer a predictable surgical experience, based on the specific diagnosis and anatomy of the patient,” the statement said.
