TURA: Two drug peddlers have been arrested from Baghmara with a small consignment of the methamphetamine narcotic tablets widely known as “Yaba’ on Monday afternoon.

Police nabbed the duo with about approximately 1000 yaba tablets as they were awaiting potential buyers near a banking complex in the heart of Baghmara town.

They later revealed to police that they obtained the contraband from another peddler located in Krishnai town of Goalpara in neighbouring Assam.

The yaba narcotic substance is widely known to be prepared and exported out of Myanmar to Bangladesh and other south asian countries. It is highly toxic and can leave a user with serious health conditions.

In the past two years, smugglers have been diverting their attention to the north eastern region of India and there have been several seizures by BSF and police in recent times. Most of the contraband is smuggled in through the plain belt region of west Garo Hills using river routes.
