SHILLONG: Aiming to make a mark in the 2013 Assembly polls in the State, the National People’s Party (NPP) is gearing up for pre-poll alliances with some political parties.

NPP leader Conrad Sangma informed The Shillong Times that the party is currently holding discussions with some political parties for a pre-poll alliance.

The NPP leader, however, did not disclose the name of the political parties with whom talks were on.

Reacting to a query on whether the party had any plans of merger, Sangma said merger with any political party is out of question.

“NPP is a political party with its own identity and it will remain so,” he added.

Sangma reiterated that the 12 former NCP legislators who had joined the NPP cannot be disqualified.

“I think NCP leader Robert Kharshiing needs to read the Constitution well,” Sangma said, adding that the Anti-Defection Law does not provide for the disqualification since two-thirds of the MLAs of the NCP had merged.

It may be mentioned that NCP national general secretary DP Tripathi has written a letter to Assembly Speaker Charles Pyngrope demanding action against the 12 MLAs who had recently defected to the Purno-led National People’s Party.
