SHILLONG: The members of Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress, on Wednesday, celebrated the 36th foundation day of the All India Mahila Congress. This time, the observance was not held in the office of Congress Bhavan due to COVID-19.
Speaking to a section of the press, president of the state Congress wing, Joplin Shylla, said, “Leaders felt that women should be active in politics and formed the All India Mahila Congress”.
About the participation of women in politics, Shylla said women in the Congress party are very enthusiastic as there are several members up to the unit and block-level. Shillong has seven blocks with around 30-40 members and the East Khasi Hills district has over 12-13 blocks. “Women enthusiastically participate in politics. They play an important role such as in holding awareness programmes for drug abuse, programmes to sensitise women on various subjects, promote the use of sanitary pads etc,” Shylla said. Stating that Congress has produced women politicians such as former ministers, Ampareen Lyngdoh, Minister Roshan Warjri and Deborah Marak and
current MLA Dikkanchi Shira, Shylla said that the party has always encouraged women to participate in politics.
The women’s wing of Congress was founded on September 15, 1984.
