SHILLONG: The Water Resources Minister, AL Hek, a former BJP legislator, who had joined the Congress in 2009, has come under fire in the context of the recent merger of NCP with NPP.

Hek was elected from Pynthorumkhrah constituency in the Assembly elections held in 2008 on a BJP ticket. Former legislator, PT Sawkmie, who is planning to contest from Pynthorumkhrah after facing defeat in 2008 from Mawlai on Tuesday defended NCP-NPP merger, but criticized Hek for shifting allegiance to the Congress.

“As far as the merger case of 12 legislators of NCP is concerned, they have prepared the ground work according to the 93rd amendment of the Constitution of India. The merger took place at block, district, and state levels. Therefore the issue of disqualification does not arise”, Sawkmie said in a statement.

According to Sawkmie, there is a strong case of disqualification as far as Hek is concerned.

“Hek violated the spirit of the Constitution by joining

the Congress without resigning from BJP”, Sawkmie alleged.

Though Sawkmie , a former UDP member defended NCP-NPP merger, he is yet to select any party to contest the upcoming Assembly polls.

Sawkmie , however, started the groundwork in Pynthorumkhrah after his defeat in 2008 Assembly elections.
