SHILLONG: The State Cabinet is likely to take a call on the contentious issue of extension of term of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) at its next meeting.
The five-year term of the GHADC will expire in October and the District Council Affairs department is likely to approach the state government to either extend the term of the present House by six months or impose administrator’s rule.
“We will discuss this in the next Cabinet meeting,” Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma told reporters on Thursday.
However, there was no word on holding elections to the GHADC in October.
Various allies of the ruling MDA coalition, including BJP, NCP and the Opposition Congress, have opposed the idea of extending the term of the present EC and have asked the government to either hold the election on time or impose administrator’s rule in the council.
