SHILLONG: Education Minister Prof RC Laloo has informed that the State Government is looking forward to provide training to a total number of 1150 teachers during the implementation of the Right to Education (RTE) in the State.

“We have decided to initially start with imparting training to those teachers who require upgrading of their teaching skills at IGNOU. We have earmarked a total amount of Rs 1.58 crore for this purpose,” Prof Laloo said while replying during the question hour in the Assembly here on Friday.

According to the Education Minister, funds for conducting the training of teachers will be from the State Plan and also through Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).

Independent legislator Manas Chaudhuri wanted to know whether the Government has any plan to have some schemes like providing ‘golden hand shake’ to the teachers who can no longer be trained.

Replying to this, the Education Minister said that the Government did not have any plan to introduce such scheme at the moment.

“We are targeting to train each and every teacher as far as practicable. We would be sending our teachers for training to various training institutions across the country. We are planning to complete the training of all the teachers by 2015-2016,” Prof Laloo said.

After embarking on the training of the teachers, the Government would then undertake other initiatives like construction of class rooms and sanctioning of various posts which are required for the successful implementation of RTE, he added.

While replying to a supplementary question of Chaudhuri on whether the Government has the requisite funds for implementing the RTE, the Minister claimed that the Government has enough funds to successfully implement RTE in the State.

“The Planning Commission has agreed to provide the funding for implementation of the RTE,” he said, while adding that 90 per cent of the fund would be borne by the Centre while the remaining 10 per cent would be the State’s share.

He said the Government has reserved Rs 400 crore for the current fiscal year for the implementation of RTE.
