JOWAI: The National Highway-44 (NH-44), Jowai-Shillong road, on Monday, witnessed a massive traffic snarl along the stretch from Mookyndur to Puriang which affected all sections of travellers, particularly those who were rushing for medical emergencies besides government officials who had to attend to their duty.
Few of those affected by the traffic jam called up The Shillong Times and informed that the sudden increase of coal-laden trucks on the road coupled with bad road condition and haphazard overtaking of vehicles were few of the main reasons which caused the traffic jam that lasted for several hours.
Asked, Superintendent of Police Bikram D Marak informed that the traffic jam was caused due to a clinker-loaded truck that broke down on the roadside.
He also informed that due to a landslide in the area recently, a two-lane road was affected, forcing the vehicles to ply one at a time and overtaking has further deteriorated the situation paving way for heavy traffic jam.
The SP further informed that after the intervention of the Ummulong Police personnel, the road was cleared for vehicular movement by evening.
