SHILLONG: The AICC leaders will visit Shillong on September 17 to discuss matters related to the party’s poll preparations in Meghalaya.

Senior Congress leader and Union Power Minister Veerappa Moily along with AICC general secretary in- charge Meghalaya, Dhaniram Shandil, will hold meetings with Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leaders and senior party men to assess the preparation in the run up to the Assembly elections due early next year.

Though there are only 60 seats, as many as 149 applicants have taken the application forms from the party office for consideration of the block congress committees.

The applications will be further examined by various high level committees before finalization.

MPCC president DD Lapang informed that he had written to Moily, who will be in Shillong for an official function on September 17, and he has agreed to spare time to meet the party men.

There is already a direction from the Congress High Command that if any Central minister from the Congress visits any state, he or she has to give time to meet the party leaders.

According to Lapang, the State Congress is gearing up for the Assembly elections.

“We need to strengthen the party at the grassroots level to ensure the victory of the Congress in the 2013 Assembly elections,” Lapang said.

The MPCC president said that though there are 149 applicants for the Congress tickets, the names will be shortlisted and if there are any controversies, this will be tackled by the AICC observers.

According to Lapang, the names will be sent to AICC by the end of October for consideration.

On the pre-poll alliance offer of NCP leader Robert Kharshiing, Lapang said that he alone cannot take any decision in this regard though Kharshiing had met him to discuss the matter.
