SHILLONG: Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Charles Pyngrope will examine on Monday the letter of protest from the NCP central leadership against the merger of twelve NCP legislators with the National People’s Party (NPP) led by PA Sangma.

An official source said on Sunday that though the Assembly Secretariat had received the letter last week, this will be examined by the Speaker on Monday.

The letter written by the general secretary of NCP, DP Tripathi from Delhi on August 30 addressed to the Speaker said, “Ours is a National Party recognized by the Election Commission of India. 12 MLAs of our party from Meghalaya have recently been taken over by the party called NPP in Meghalaya without the consent of our party chief which is against the norms”.

The letter sent by speed post also said that since twelve MLAs have violated the ‘constitution of our party, they will be charged under Anti Defection Law’.

Lodging the protest, Tripathi sought the intervention of the Speaker to take appropriate action. “However, our party will take suitable disciplinary action against them,” he added.

According to sources, the Assembly Speaker is unlikely to take any action since Para 4 of the Anti-Defection Law suggests that two-thirds of the legislators can merge with any other party. Moreover, a member of the Assembly should lodge the complaint against the legislators and not any party leader, sources added.
