code and welcome a new one—time to say hello to Jeans.”
Students of St Mary’s College can now go to college wearing jeans. For those wondering about the significance of the same, it may be mentioned that the denims were forbidden in the college since the time of its inception.
So it’s ‘Halleluiah’ and definitely better late than never for the Marians who can now trod the city roads in jeans on their way to college.
It may be mentioned that the decision was taken by the college authorities last month and has been welcomed by all since then.
St Mary’s, one of the premier institutions in the state, has always imposed a ban on jeans terming it as non-lady-like till the change was called for. However, the transformation has gathered much praise from the students of the college who had been hoping for it for a long time now.
“I have always preferred jeans since they are comfortable and easy to walk around and I feel the relaxation in the guidelines (of the college) as far as dress code is concerned is a pleasant development”, a class XI (Arts) student, L Lyngdoh said.
The relaxation though has come with its share of bare minimum limitations which include wearing the jeans with ‘something decent’ like the kurta or a long t-shirt.
“Whatever the limitations are, I’m just glad that I would get to wear jeans to college. It adds a new dimension to my wardrobe”, a class XII (Arts) student, BL Nongpiur said.
An alumni of the college while expressing her view on the recent change said it is a good thing that the college is shifting jeans from the ‘Don’t’ to the ‘Do’ column of the old rule book.
“I just felt that it was a bit unfair for the college to make this change now and not 5 years ago but nevertheless, I’m glad that it has alter the dress code finally”, she added in a lighter vein.
On the same note, a class XI student of the college BM Shullai said when she first joined the college the ban on jeans puzzled her.
“But, I have to praise the college authorities for not waiting another year to introduce this change. Just imagine, coming to college during the winter season wearing a skirt or a thin salwar,” Shullai added.
It can be said that the transformation, be it in a small way, has brought smiles to the faces of the hundreds of students’ studying in the college.
