Parishad condoles demise of noted city doctor
SHILLONG: The Bangiya Sahitya Parishad, Shillong, has condoled the demise of noted physician, Dr Subrata Das, who was also associated with the Parishad. During a meeting held recently, the members of the Parishad spoke highly of Dr Das who was not only a medical specialist but also a social worker and a responsible citizen. A one-minute silence was also observed during the meeting in memory of the departed soul.

Burn firecrackers till 5pm: WJH DC
JOWAI: With the season of festivals at hand, West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner has prohibited burning of firecrackers in Diwali although the nod has been given to celebrate upcoming pujas. According to a statement on Wednesday, celebration of Durga Puja, Lakshmi Puja and Kali Puja has been allowed with strict adherence to the SOPs issued by the government. Further, the DC has said that burning of firecrackers in public places, paths and roads during Lakshmi Puja and Diwali will be only allowed till 5 pm.
‘Aadhaar vital to avail govt schemes’
NONGSTOIN: The West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner has said that possessing an Aadhaar card is imperative for the beneficiaries to continue enjoying the schemes provided by the government. The DC said this during a meeting on Monday at the Conference Hall, DC Office, Nongstoin. It may be mentioned that the special Aadhaar enrolment in West Khasi Hills will take place from October 21 onwards till the end of the year. The registration will take place in the DC Office, SDO (Civil) Mairang and Mawshynrut. The DC suggested that every head of a household and dealers of FPS are to enrol themselves for Aadhaar. He also exhorted various department officials, Gramsevaks, Ashas and Aganwadi workers to spread the word so people can get themselves enrolled.

Man killed in WKH road mishap
NONGSTOIN: A person was killed on the spot following a head-on collision between a Bolero pick-up and a Maruti car at Mawlong in Mairang, West Khasi Hills. As per information, the incident happened on Monday night when the Maruti car (ML05D6082), which was heading towards Shillong, collided with the Bolero (ML06A1519) coming from the opposite direction. It was following this, the driver of the Maruti car, Paising Hoojon, from Mawsium village died on the spot. Following the receipt of the information, the police rushed to the scene to ascertain the cause.

Cops recover country-made arms
TURA: North Garo Hills Police, on Tuesday, recovered a hidden cache of country-made arms suspected to have been kept by unscrupulous persons to be used for perpetrating crimes in the area. Acting on reliable inputs, a police team launched a covert operation in an area under Bajengdoba Police Station and recovered the concealed arms along with other items from a single spot. The recovered items included four country-made guns along with cartridges, a kukri, camouflage outfits and a pair of boots. Further investigation is on, police informed.
