Agartala: Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) have decided to conduct a joint inspection next week to expedite wire fencing in remaining part along Tripura-Bangladesh border.

According to report, about 20 per cent areas, including some disputed patches, were left out from fencing and the work was not progressing, as the alignment of erection has not yet been finalised.

BSF officials said here on Saturday fencing work in 47 patches along border had been stopped because of non-compliance of Indira-Mujib pact singed in 1975, which disallowed construction of permanent structure within 150 yards from zero line.

“As many as 21 locations are identified in western border where both BSF and BGB agreed to erect single line fencing instead of composite fencing otherwise, a number of market, schools and other institutions would be fenced out,” BSF officials said, adding BGB had not yet cleared the nod.

Though fencing work in 689 km border has been completed, some strategic border patches in eastern parts still remained unfenced, virtually giving a free zone for cross border movement of insurgents and criminals.

Besides completion of fencing by this fiscal, Ministry of Home Affairs was contemplating for installing flood lighting system as part of full-proof border management within stipulated time, officials stated.

However, of total 720 km border, flood lighting work has been completed in 434 km stretches and Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) has connected only 60 km so far. (UNI)
