Gold worth Rs 70.7L seized
Chennai: A total of Rs 70.7 lakh worth of gold cut bits and bars have been seized from air passengers on their arrival here from Dubai, Customs officials.
This morning, gold cut bits and some in paste form concealed in the pant pockets of two passengers, hailing from Ramanathapuram, were seized, a press release said.
On Saturday, gold concealed in the rectums of four passengers was seized, the release said.Investigations are on, it added. (PTI)
Sandalwood tree trunk stolen
Aurangabad: A sandalwood tree trunk was stolen from the Aurangabad collector’s residential premises located in the city’s VIP Road, police said on Sunday.
A complaint was lodged on Saturday, a Begumpura police station official said.
“A sandalwood tree was brought down at the collector’s residence between 1:30am and 7am on Friday and the trunk etc carted away. Efforts are on to nab the culprits,” said police station in charge Sachin Sanap. (PTI)
Hookah parlour raided
Thane: Police have raided a hookah parlour being allegedly operated illegally in Navi Mumbai and registered a case against 230 people for violating COVID-19 guidelines and other norms, an official said on Sunday.
Acting on a tip-off, the police raided the hookah parlour located in Nerul area in Maharashtra late on Saturday night and found 203 customers drinking and smoking hookahs, Navi Mumbai’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime) Pravin Patil said.
A case was later registered against the 203 customers and 27 staff members under provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the Epidemic Diseases Act, the National Disaster Management Act and the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, he said.
No arrest has been made so far, he added. (PTI)
Man attempts self-immolation
Nagpur: A beer bar owner allegedly attempted self-immolation near the residence of Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh in Nagpur city, but the police staff on duty there foiled his bid, an official said on Sunday.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, he said.
According to police, the man took the step as he has been facing financial issues due to the coronavirus-triggered lockdown.
Inspector Atul Sabnis of Sitabuldi police station said that the bar owner had suffered losses due to the lockdown.
“Due to the losses, he had started living in a rented house. But as he failed to pay the rent for three moths, the landlord had locked the flat,” he said.
Further investigation into the case is on. (PTI)
