SHILLONG: The State government on Monday announced that it would provide ex-gratia payment to the next of kin of the two state police constables who drowned during training at the ITBP training school, Dehradun.

Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma announced this after placing wreaths on the body of the two constables of the 1st MLP Battalion at Mawiong, near here.

The Chief Minister was accompanied by Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh and Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen M Lyngdoh.

The duo — Kumbinon Mawlong and Dannyboy Nongkhlaw — were part of 116 special police personnel who were undergoing specialized “commando” training on counter insurgency operations at the ITBP training centre at Dehra Dun.

Both were reported drown on Saturday noon while negotiating a watery obstacle, police said even as a high level inquiry has been ordered to probe the incident.

The State Director General of Police N Ramachandran has deputed SK Jain, ADGP (Special Branch), to conduct an independent inquiry into the incident.

Meanwhile, the Director General Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Ranjit Sinha on Monday said that the ITBP has already instituted a court of inquiry to find out the reason which led to the drowning of the two constables.

According to Sinha, necessary action would be taken on the basis of the inquiry report.

He also asserted that earlier several boys from Meghalaya had gone to the same school to undergo training and many had successfully completed their training without such incidents being reported.
