Guwahati: The Assam Government on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set the ball rolling for the 50 skill development centres for youth from tea tribe communities in the State.

The MoU was signed with H P Institute of Insurance in presence of Prithvi Majhi, minister for revenue, labour and employment and welfare of tea tribe welfare department in his office chamber in Dispur.

The skill development centres have been set up at the approval of the Planning Commission of India to provide vocational training to youth from the tea tribe to make them capable of self-employment.

There is hardly any employment avenues in the tea estates of Assam for the educated youth from the tea tribe community whose members are traditionally engaged for manual works like plucking in tea gardens and in the tea manufacturing factories. The new generation education wards of the tea garden workers have no inclination to do manual jobs in tea estates thereby creating huge pool of unemployed youth in tea estate areas of the State.

In view of the growing number of unemployed among tea garden community, Assam government has decided to provide them vocational training on various trades so that they become capable of setting up their own ventures.
