SHILLONG, Nov 14: East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo on Saturday said that 2,000 cooperative societies from Meghalaya have supported the efforts of the state government in providing relief to the vulnerable sections of society.
She added that AMUL, MARKFED, IFFCO, among other cooperative societies, have also lent a hand in rendering relief.
Laloo said this during the observance of 67th All India Cooperative Week 2020 in the city.
The DC, who attended the programme as the chief guest, reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s idea and, referring to COVID-19 scenario, said that crisis has to be turned into an opportunity.
“In Meghalaya, cooperatives have been fundamental in augmenting and mobilising people and resources. Their role in value addition, packaging, marketing and making tourism more vibrant has been exemplary. However, the reality of increasing number of non-functional cooperative societies should be looked into,” the DC said.
She added that there needs to be a convergence of all line departments so as to ensure that the cooperative society can function to their optimum.
