MAWKYRWAT, Nov 18: Leaders of different pressure groups —Synjuk ki Seng Samla Shnong, Federation of Khasi-Jaintia & Garo People (FKJGP) and Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) — and PWD (Roads) officials said the work for blacktopping of one particular road in Mawkyrwat area is unsatisfactory after conducting an inspection of the ongoing works on Wednesday.
The blacktopping of various roads has been taken up in Mawkyrwat under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).
“During the inspection, it was found that the construction of the Mawkyrwat-Pyndensakwang Road was not up to the mark as the contractor mostly used substandard gravel and stones for construction. The office had instructed the contractor to use better quality materials so as to construct a lasting road,” chairman of the Synjuk, Wallambok Syiemiong, said.
The NGOs had also inspected the construction of Mawrangland Road, Photjaud War Road, Saitsnat Road and Mawlangwir-Wahsiej Road, and have been satisfied with the work, Syiemiong said.
After receiving complaints from a number of people from Shiliang Um Rilang area, the NGOs also inspected the Wahsiej Road near the Riliang River and found that the contractor has left the road unattended for more than six months which causes difficulty for vehicles to move about.
“After discussing the problems faced by the people of Shiliang Um Rilang area, it was agreed that the road needs to be temporarily closed so that the contractor can carry out the work,” Syiemiong said.
Urging the contractor to complete works within the time frame, Syiemiong informed that the NGOs will continue to monitor the implementation of the PMGSY scheme in the region.
