10 smugglers, contraband, cattle seized on Indo-Bangla border

Guwahati: As many as ten smugglers, including three from Bangladsesh, were apprehended and large contingents of contraband and cattle were seized in separate incidents by the troops of Border Security Force (BSF) of Guwahati frontier during August.

A BSF release said here today that during the previous month, BSF seized 1183 bottles of Phensidyl (codeine based cough syrup), 24.5 kgs of ganja and 404 gms of brown sugar on the international border, along with three smugglers from Bangladesh and seven from India.

The troops also seized during the same period 408 cattle and other contraband items to the estimated cost over Rs 33.23 lakh, which has been deposited with concerned authorities for further disposal.

The BSF troops have successfully thwarted innumerable attempts of smugglers by use of non-lethal weapons /ammunition and laying of ambushes ahead of Indo-Bangladesh border fence, the release added.

Bangladesh and the Border Guards of Bangladesh (BGB) have always been raising the issue of smuggling of narcotic substances from India to Bangladesh in all the forums.

The BSF has been carrying out round-the-clock vigil on the border to apprehend smugglers/ kingpins involved in smuggling. The BSF Guwahati Frontier is making all out efforts to check infiltration/smuggling of drugs/ Phensidyl and any other cross border crimes, the release stated. (UNI)
