LONDON: Sir Alex Ferguson has stated Manchester United will be supportive of Liverpool in what is sure to be an emotional Sunday afternoon at Anfield.

He’s hoping United supporters will follow suit.

In Liverpool’s first home match since the recent findings surrounding the Hillsborough disaster of 1989, the Reds will try to pay homage to the fallen 96 by getting their first win of the season against Ferguson’s Red Devils.

“As a club we’re totally in support of Liverpool and the situation they’re in,” Ferguson told Manchester United’s official website.

On the pitch, Liverpool are trying to end a season-opening four-game win drought after Luis Suarez’s goal in the 71st minute salvaged a 1-1 draw at Sunderland last weekend. However, they stepped out of league play on Thursday for a 5-3 win at Switzerland’s Young Boys.

“I don’t see it as courageous or brave, I just trust in my players,” manager Brendan Rodgers told the team’s website.

Thursday’s performance may convince Rodgers to include 20-year-old Jonjo Shelvey in the lineup again after the midfielder scored Liverpool’s final two goals off the bench.

Suarez should be back in the first team after being rested on Thursday. He has three goals in four matches and netted Liverpool’s lone tally in a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford on February 11. (Reuters)
