SHILLONG, Dec 4: Moved by the plight of the people in South Garo Hills, Governor Satya Pal Malik has now stressed on the need for the state or any agency to adopt the district.
Malik was on a two-day visit to Garo Hills to review various developmental schemes and flagship programmes of the Centre, and also the performance of the region. He had also reviewed the functioning of the GHADC as well as the construction of the Governor’s House in Tura.
During the meeting with the deputy commissioners of South Garo Hills and North Garo Hills, the South Garo Hills DC apprised Malik of the deplorable road connectivity in the district.
The DC lamented that the 160-km road from Tura to Baghmara is in a bad shape and it takes about 6 hours for people to reach their destination.
He said the district has also been found wanting in healthcare services as the district hospital misses out on many facilities. The DC also expressed discontent over the government offices in the district being in shambles.
Giving an ear to the hurdles, the Governor exhorted the state government to take special care of the district along with North Garo Hills.
“If anything can be done from Raj Bhavan, it will be done for the districts,” sources said.
In addition, the Governor has also decided to write personally for more measures for the two districts.
