NONGPOH, Dec 5: Cabinet minister Dasakhiat Lamare on Friday laid the foundation stone for construction of Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) at Umtrai village, which, the minister believes, will ensure that the tribal students from remote areas get access to quality education.
It may be mentioned that the Ministry of Tribal Affairs has sanctioned Rs 28 crore for the project.
Speaking on the occasion, Lamare expressed his gratitude to the Lyngdoh and the Basan of the Raid Nongkhap for donating the land for the school construction.
Stating that Umtrai village has been chosen as one of the recipients of this project, he said this project aims to ensure tribal students get access to quality education in the remote areas, and also aspires to uplift and promote other curricular activities.
Encouraging people to support their children, the minister also exhorted locals to cooperate with the officials engaged in the school construction.
Meanwhile, the Joint Director, VS Nongbet, in his keynote address, said that this project is a flagship programme of the central government to provide free residential education from class VI-XII to the tribal students.
With regard to the school infrastructure, Nongbet said the establishment will include staff quarters, school building, separate hostels for boys and girls and a playground.
