SHILLONG: The UDP has favoured a probe into alleged nexus between Congress and the Garo militant outfit GNLA by an independent agency.

Without specifying on the agency which should probe the matter UDP’s Working president Paul Lyngdoh said, “My party is concerned about the militant outfit’s attempts to influence the voters. This is a very dangerous trend”.

Lyngdoh was speaking to newsmen after the meeting of the General Council of the party’s State Youth Wing here on Monday.

The UDP working president said that any decision on withdrawing support from the Congress-led MUA Government over the alleged nexus would be taken by the party.

He, however, added “With four months left for the elections, it would not be a good idea to withdraw support from the Government.”

Referring to the prevailing law and order situation in Garo Hills, Lyngdoh alleged that the Government has allowed the GNLA to spread its wings.

Meanwhile, newly elected UDP State Youth Wing vice president Rocky R Marak said that people are not getting influenced by GNLA chairman Champion R Sangma’s talks of supporting the Congress.

“This diktat of the GNLA would not translate into votes. In fact, it would have a huge negative impact on the Congress’ poll prospects,” Marak said adding that people of Garo Hills are unhappy with the activities of the GNLA.

While commenting on the statement made by the GNLA chairman Champion R Sangma, he said that he did not know in what context he (Champion) made such statement.

“I suspect there is some hidden political agenda on the part of Champion which prompted him to come up with such statement,” he said.
