Court extends Champion’s judicial custody

 SHILLONG: A city court on Tuesday extended the judicial custody of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) chief Champion R. Sangma by 14 days, fourth time since he was arrested along the Indo-Bangla border on July 30.

Informing this here, Champion’s lawyer Sujit Dey said the court has fixed October 9 for consideration of charges against the Garo rebel group chief who has been booked under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for waging war against the Indian state.

It may be mentioned as many as ten cases have been registered against the GNLA chief who was arrested by the State police after he was handed over by the Bangladeshi authorities.

Reacting to a query whether his client has any plan to move a fresh bail application, the lawyer said, “Right things would be done at the right time.”

Earlier, the court had rejected the bail petition of the GNLA chief.

When asked whether there is any move to book Champion under the Meghalaya Preventive Detention Act (MPDA),the lawyer said, “It is for the authorities to decide.”

It may be mentioned that the State police has already filed the chargesheet against Champion and he has been booked under Section 121 (A) (attempting to wage war against the Government of India) of the IPC and Section 16, 18 and 38 apart from section 1 and 2 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 1967.
