SHILLONG, Dec 12: Congress leader Charles Pyngrope has questioned the PHE department over the frequent disruptions in water supply to different parts of the city.
The statement comes in the wake of the disruption in water supply at several localities of the city due to the breakdown of the 750 mm CI gravity main of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) at Laitjem village. However, after a five-day hiatus, many heaved a sigh of relief on Saturday with the resumption of water supply.
“I was informed that the laying of new blue pipes from GSWSS were laid and tested, and it was running smoothly. But why are they still supplying water from the old metal pipes which are corroded and cannot take the force of water anymore?” Pyngrope said.
He also asked the department to supply water from the newly laid blue pipes. “Many people are forced to buy water due to its unavailability,” he bemoaned.
Earlier, North Shillong MLA, Adelbert Nongrum, had said that despite the 1000-mm main gravity pipe under Phase-III of the GSWSS being laid and tested, many parts of the city are often subjected to the problems of non-supply of water.
