SHILLONG: The wastage of huge amount of water which has been going on for nearly three months on the road from Rilbong point to Iewduh has finally caught the attention of the Government.
The continuous flow of water has been causing inconvenience to the pedestrians besides partially damaging the stretch of road.
Though the road falls within the Cantonment area, water is supplied by the Shillong Municipal Board.
After the matter was brought to the notice of Municipal Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh two weeks ago by traffic constables, she directed the department to repair the damaged pipelines without causing any traffic congestion in that area which has heavy traffic flow throughout the day.
However, though the pipelines were repaired recently, leakages have continued.
When contacted, Water Works Superintendent of the Municipal Board, J Lyngdoh, stated that when the matter was brought to the notice of the Board two weeks back the matter was resolved then and there.
“But five days ago the pipelines along the road burst leading to a huge discharge of water,” Lyngdoh said, adding since the road belongs to the Cantonment, permission has to be acquired before replacing the pipelines with new ones.
“Work will start after permission from the Cantonment is acquired tomorrow,” Lyngdoh said on Wednesday.
Stating that the pipelines are quite old, the official said, “New pipelines have already been placed in the area and what we are waiting now is just permission to lay them.”
Lyngdoh further mentioned that they are targeting to finish the work within 24 hours to ensure continuous supply of water.
Meanwhile, Ampareen, who is currently in Williamnagar, has stated that she will direct the CEO of the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) to supervise the work.
