SHILLONG: Disappointed over the act of ‘betrayal’ on the part of the UDP leadership, Nongthymmai sitting MDC Latiplang Kharkongor is likely to resign from the party on Thursday.

“It is misleading to say that I have withdrawn from the race for the party ticket. The fact is that I was betrayed by the UDP leadership,” Kharkongor said while speaking to The Shillong Times here on Wednesday.

While informing about his meeting with the UDP president Dr Donkupar Roy and other senior leaders of the party, he said that all of them insisted that majority of the people wanted the ticket to be given to Dr Jemino Mawthoh.

“If the majority feels that the ticket should got to Mawthoh then what can I say. My only contention is that they should have respected the merger UDP-KHNAM agreement. Suprisingly, everyone was silent about the agreement,” he said. While stating that this decision was taken to serve the political interests of a senior UDP leader, Kharkongor however, said that this decision to allot the ticket to Mawthoh is totally unjustified since he was rejected by the people in both Assembly and District Council elections.

“A person who has lost two consecutive elections can never be considered as a potential winner,” he said.

When asked about his future course of action, he said that he is likely to submit his resignation to the UDP president on Thursday.

‘I will take a final call whether to contest the upcoming election after consulting my supporters,” Kharkongor added.
