SHILLONG: The various militant outfits of the region have found a ‘risk-free’ passage in Meghalaya to cross over from Bangladesh.

The outfits have been using the route through Hat Mawdon Sirdarship under Mawsynram constituency in East Khasi Hills district, villagers said while blaming the delay in construction of the border fencing by the National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) for the militant movement in the area.

The villagers of Hat Madon expressed their concern over the alarming presence of ultras during a meeting of the Citizen Committee of Mawsynram Police Station at Mawsynram recently.

President of the Village Defence Party (VDP) of Hat Madon, Horal Skhemlon, claimed that he had noticed at least on three occasions groups of people look like Manipuris with huge bags on their back crossing over to Indian territory from across the border.  He also claimed to have seen a Garo person helping these people to cross the border.

Skhemlon said he strongly suspected they were militants since their bags seem to contain lot of arms.

“A few days ago I saw another group of Manipuri people crossing over from Bangladesh with the help one Garo fellow,” the VDP president said.

The VDP is trying to locate the Garo person who is helping the militant, he added.
