TURA: Attempts by drug smugglers and criminals to use Garo Hills as a staging point for distribution of narcotics continues unabated with banned substances continuing to flow in from the neighbouring state of Assam and Bangladesh, which shares a long, at places porous, border with the region.
A suspected narcotics peddler who entered the region from Assam’s Mankachar border town, close to Bangladesh, was apprehended on Thursday by a joint team of police and BSF troopers at an entry point in South West Garo Hills district.
“He was carrying 3499 tablets of suspected Yaba drugs when he was apprehended at Monabari police check point in our district yesterday,” informed South West Garo Hills district superintendent of police Rituraj Ravi.
A team led by a deputy SP, headquarters,  along with police and BSF team on duty at Monabari Monabari intercepted the consignment.
The arrested man has reportedly confessed to police that he was smuggling in the drugs to be delivered to another individual.
Police have launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the person who was scheduled to receive the package.
Two months ago, police in Baghmara town took down a gang behind the distribution and sale of the yaba narcotic drugs arresting several individuals.
