SHILLONG: Residents of Lum Kartic Lane – the lane that connects Laban Last Stop (opposite Ripple Side) with Harisabha and ultimately Laban Main Road – are living in a state of worry since a portion of the Municipal guard wall (reinforcement wall made of stone boulders) on which the lane is running, collapsed during the recent heavy downpour causing panic among the residents.

A resident of the area, SK Deb, said that the debris fell on his house which prompted him to seek intervention of the authorities.

Deb, in a letter dispatched in August, had apprised the Chief Executive Officer of the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) about the collapse of the wall but the SMB is yet to initiate any action in this regard.

The local headman has also been apprised about the collapse of the stone boulder reinforcement wall leading to gradual erosion of the underneath earth, but in vain.

It may be mentioned that there are several residents who are dependent on the lane to go to Laban Last Stop or Harisabha and Laban.

“This lane has become unsafe for pedestrians since at any time the lane itself can go down since the stone boulder reinforcement has collapsed resulting in a deep void underneath this lane,” said a concerned resident of the locality.

With the Durga Puja celebration due soon, residents feel that accidents are imminent.

There are also other residents who fear that if the reinforcement wall is not repaired immediately then the situation may escalate further and the nearby houses would also be affected.

Residents have urged the local legislator to look into the issue without any further delay so that no untoward incident occurs in future.
