SHILLONG: Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Cultural Centre (RMVCC) on Saturday gave away 10 free computers to eight students and two faculty members of the mission besides awarding certificates and scholarships to 1800 other students who had successfully completed the 50th session of their computer training programme.

Started in 2002 with only 30 students, five computers and 6 teachers, the computer training unit of the centre grew in strength with more than 22,000 beneficiaries during the last ten years. This centre had also started mobile computer training for rural schools and online theory exams in 2011. The eight students who received free computer gifts were selected based on their merits, economic background, number of courses, overall personality and presentation. Besides, two other teachers were also gifted with a laptop taking into consideration their immense contribution to the centre for ten years and more.

Jaiaw MLA Paul Lyngdoh, who was the chief guest on the occasion, highlighted the role of computer literate youth in shaping the future of the State.

Meanwhile, in his speech, Shakti Prasad Mishra, a recipient of President’s award for teaching from Ramkrishna Mission Purulia, said that India was rising from a state of passivity and to maintain the momentum it is important to promote practical education.
