SHILLONG, Jan 30: Senior Congress leader Ampareen Lyngdoh has said the party would try to ensure that the candidates for the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections are selected democratically.
“We need to ensure that the candidates are selected democratically because the choice of candidates and issues will be important for the performance of our party in the GHADC polls,” she said.
Admitting that the upcoming GHADC polls would test the strength of the ruling dispensation and the survival of the Opposition, Lyngdoh asked the party members to put their heads together and retain the grassroots support.
“If our grassroots support dwindles, we will have a lot of problems in 2023,” she cautioned while hoping that the allegations of corruption in GHADC substantiated to a large extent would influence the choice of the voters.
Lyngdoh maintained that the party needs to put its best foot forward as the outcome of the GHADC polls could impact that of the 2023 Assembly elections in Meghalaya.
Apart from the Congress, the National People’s Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party have started their preparations for the GHADC polls scheduled to be held on April 9.
The GHADC has been in the news for some time now for the allegations of large-scale corruption and the council’s inability to clear the salaries of its employees for more than 30 months.
