Guwahati: The health of a wounded rhino, rescued from the flood waters of the Brahmaputra three days ago, is improving in the Zoo here, its vet M L Smith said on Wednesday. Asked when the rhino is likely to be relocated to either Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary from where she had strayed away or to Manas National Park, he said “the authorities will decide when to release it to the wild. She has to heal first”. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi visited the Zoo on Tuesday and took stock of the rhino and expressed satisfaction at the medical attention provided to it.

Meanwhile, a rhino poacher has been arrested on Wednesday and a horn recovered from his possession in Assam’s Nagaon district, police said. Acting on a tip-off, the police launched an operation in Balighat area of the district and nabbed the person. The arrested person has been identified as Abdul Khaleque and 1350 gm rhino horn was recovered from his possession, sources added. (PTI)
