SHILLONG: Following reports of the presence of two minors from Assam in the controversial New Life Home, a Guwahati-based NGO, Universal Team for Social Action and Help (UTSAH), has decided to send a team to Shillong in order to rescue the children. Six children were rescued from the hostel on September 29 after Reverend SK Miller was arrested for allegedly abusing the minors. While two boys had escaped a day before Miller’s arrest, two others are still at the shelter home.
Talking to The Shillong Times here on Wednesday, UTSAH chairman Miguel Queah said that the NGO will send four-member team to Shillong on Friday to ascertain the background of the children.
“We have to verify if the boys are really from Assam following which we will produce them before the District Child Welfare Committee and as per direction, the children will be taken back (to Assam),” Queah said.
Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal assured coordination to the Assam NGO.
Goyal also informed that the district administration had not received any direction from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights to prepare a report on the matter.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights had recently sought a report from the state government on the alleged rape and molestation by Reverend Miller of New Life Ministry. The Social Welafare department has also not received any directions from the Commission so far.
