SHILLONG: Let down by the fast track court, the family members of a minor, who was sexually abused by one Small Phawa in Jowai last year, have decided to pursue the case until justice is served.
In a hearing held here on Monday, the judge of the fast track court had advised the victim’s family to enter into a compromise with the accused. However, the same was rejected by the family which is determined to carry on with the fight.
“I have made my decision clear that I don’t want this case to end in a compromise. I will fight till the end even if it means that I have to move the High Court or the Supreme Court,” the victim’s grandfather said.
The incident happened on November last year when the 14-year old minor was alleged raped by one Small Phawa at Riat Siatsim, Jowai.
Meanwhile, in another case of sexual abuse against a minor, a 14-year-old victim from Mawlyndep village, who was raped by one Sabili Mawlong (28) on June 9 this year, has alleged that the police might be trying to push her into a compromise with the accused.
“The police personnel who came to my village on Tuesday repeatedly asked me to verify the crime. I don’t understand why they are asking the same thing over and over again when they already know the truth,” the victim said.
“If it is the ploy of the accused to threaten and pressurize me to enter into a compromise, then they better think again because I am not going to change my statement,” she added.
It may be mentioned that Sabili Mawlong who had been evading arrest after his bail application was rejected by the High Court was arrested last week.
Meanwhile, when contacted, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang said that the victim had met him on Wednesday and apprised him of the doubts and false suggestions received from some people.
“They (the victim’s family) had been discouraged to go to the court by some people who warned them about the expenses involved,” Kharkrang said adding that he allayed their fears while promising to extend all possible help as and when required.
